within a reasonable time — often understood as around
48 hours for many offences, though the exact limit can depend on the circumstances.
While you're held, you have the right to
stay silent, the right to
contact an attorney, and the right to be told why you're being held. If you can't afford a lawyer, the
Legal Aid Authority may be able to help.
